But Amstaffs are more aggressive towards dogs. They have accommodative temperament They will be quick to tell you that staffies are very accommodative and require two things in life. One, close human contact and two, a chance to play. He has a close and cordial relationship with people such as that all he wants is to be close to you but not exiled to the yard. Staffords are highly intelligent, but they are also freethinkers who like to do things their own way.
They need firm, patient, consistent training. Staffordshire Bull Terriers are energetic dogs who need a vigorous walk or play session daily. Most dogs are instinctively protective of their owners and families. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is one of those naturally protective dogs. Staffordshire Bull Terriers do not adjust well to alone time. It is entirely your decision which Staffordshire Bull Terrier you choose — male or female, puppy or adult.
A male is more dominant, needs more leadership and will try to boss other dogs about. The male dog is more dominant in the wild and will always be the leader of the pack. Are Staffordshire Bull Terriers easy to train? Staffies are intelligent dogs and can be trained well if you are committed and consistent. As with so many breeds, the Staffie can display selective hearing when distracted and some owners prefer to keep them on the lead.
Staffies can make great family pets As a rule, they are gentle, affectionate dogs who adore people. But unfortunately so many people that own them assume from the offset that they are going to be aggressive, and do nothing to prevent it. They LIKE having a huge, heavy set dog straining at a leash.
It gives them a feeling of power and intimidation. They are a self-fulfilling prophecy in most cases, and its all down to human greed and ignorance. Fleur likes this. I must admit I'm cautious of all other dogs we meet always ensure that they are dog friendly before I allow mine to play, due to their small size and the fact Lilly bounces around like a rabbit. However although every Staffie I've met has been very people friendly, our neighbors is beautiful, I've not met one that is dog friendly. Even our neighbors that was bought up with another Staffie will go for our dogs. I also think there is a bit of a self realising prophecy around staffies, even with decent owners.
Ive met quite a few staffies owners around when Diego was a pup and we used to go to the Doggy Park and once there were like 3 or 4 staff pups at the same time and one of the owner started saying like "oh they wont be able to play like this together in a few months" matter of fact like It depends on the temperament of each dog, their socialisation, their home environment etc I was a bit shocked that a staffords owner would take for granted that their dog could not interact well in the future with other dogs especially of the same breed!!
I agree there may be a greater likelihood of STB not being great dog-lovers because of their past but that doesnt mean, far from it, they have to become dog-aggressive!!
I went with Diego to a SBT show a couple of weeks ago, just out of curiosity and was a bit shocked to see some VERY dog aggressive dogs around there the kind that just start having a go at the other dog as soon as it sees it even from a distance!
I showed my Staffords, I agree with Sallyanne, mine used to bark and make lots of noise, they were just showing off, you see with Staffords it's all about 'Me Me Me' they are natural show offs who like to be the centre of attention.
Well its that kind of "showing off" that tends to scare people a little really.. And I can tell you looking at the owners that they did not seem to think it was a show off barking and certainly did not want me near their dogs I pretty sure I can tell when a dog is being aggressive although im no expert thanx.
It was only a few of them really, far from a majority! But it shocked me nonetheless. The general noise and "happy" barking didnt bother me, i understand it as part of the excitement of the show, but thats not what im talking about.
