Which season of doctor who is the best

No full series in - and Doctor Who fans might've felt they had cause to worry after fluffy Easter special 'Planet of the Dead' turned out to be as hollow as a chocolate egg. But November's 'The Waters of Mars' was an utterly terrifying take on the show's classic 'base-under-siege' format, with some of the scariest monsters it has featured to date.

And topped with a superb performance from David Tennant as a desperate Doctor who's lost sight of his responsibilities. It's also down to the strength of Tennant's performances that his over-stuffed swansong 'The End of Time' succeeds, despite threatening to collapse under its own weight. Perhaps no scenes in Doctor Who are as upsetting as the demise of his beloved Doctor - the regeneration, of course, but also the tragic rallying against his own imminent demise.

Excellent work. This series of Doctor Who was a marked improvement on the run, with lead Capaldi demonstrating a visibly firmer grasp on the lead role - a less aggressive yet no less powerful turn, with a healthy Tom Baker influence. The second half of the series was particularly impressive - with the politically-minded Zygon two-parter , Clara's demise in ' Face the Raven ' and, in particular, the solo Doctor episode ' Heaven Sent ' all hitting the mark.

Finale episode ' Hell Bent ' somewhat fumbled Jenna Coleman's ultimate departure - but remains a good finish to a great series, the best Doctor Who had been since Matt Smith's freshman run.

It was here that 'new' Doctor Who went from being a sizeable hit to a fully-fledged phenomenon, with David Tennant's charm-offensive Doctor taking the series to dizzying new heights of popularity.

Series two tipped its hat to the past, bringing back old companion Sarah Jane Elisabeth Sladen in the poignant 'School Reunion', but also guaranteed the show's future with groundbreaking instalments like grand romance 'The Girl in the Fireplace'.

True, the smitten-kitten pairing of the Tenth Doctor and Rose - though beloved of Tumblr - was actually the least successful pairing of the Tennant era. But their 'break-up' in series closer 'Doomsday' was unquestionably powerful. Plus, for the truly stony-hearted, there were Daleks battling Cybermen - with the cliffhanger to 'Army of Ghosts' ranking as one of the finest ever in the series history. Even if you don't buy into the argument that Martha's unrequited love story was more interesting than the Doctor and Rose's perfect romance, there's still no denying that series three offered up some top-quality Doctor Who.

The fifth Doctor goes out a brave hero sacrificing his life for his new companion Peri. It rendered an already poor story woeful. In a nutshell: The Eighties came and Doctor Who changed with it. An exciting, shiny new title sequence, however, was accompanied by a more sombre Tom Baker in his final run of episodes as the Time Lord. Lowlight: The Doctor took his pal Romana, also a Time Lord or Lady depending on your vernacular to Brighton where robot dog K-9 went into the sea and malfunctioned.

Highlight: In a scene of extreme fan-servicing, past Doctors were resurrected for the series finale ahead of the 50th anniversary Special. Lowlight: "The Rings Of Akhaten" became the new worst episode ever in many eyes. Its production values left quite a lot to be desired. Lowlight: Fans were pretty vocal about that time when the Moon was revealed to be a giant space dragon egg.

And not in a nice way. In a nutshell: The Doctor gets killed in the first episode and ends up marrying River Song. Highlight: Steven Moffat introduced new monsters The Silence who you forgot about as soon as you looked away. Also, they were creepy bastards. Worth walking the plank just to miss. Highlight: Episode "Heaven Sent" was basically Peter Capaldi wandering around a creepy castle being chased by an even creepier creature.

Oh, and he spends billions of years punching his way through a wall made of diamonds to get back to his friend Clara. Ah, happy days. Lowlight: The second half of this season really comes off the rails with the tedious, drab and, at times, embarrassing entries, "The Mutants" and "The Time Monster". In a nutshell: The dream team begins. The third Doctor is joined by the adorable Jo Grant and battles new nemesis The Master on a weekly basis almost.

Lowlight: The plodding Colony In Space slightly slows the pace of season with its slightly unmemorable six parts. In a nutshell: The original Team Tardis begins to break up after more battles with the Daleks.

To say that the twelfth season of Doctor Who had a rocky start, an even rockier middle, and a disastrous ending, is an understatement. Not even the reappearances of the Doctor's archnemesis, the Master , and fan-favorite Captain Jack Harkness, were able to save the season from being a terrible mess. This season's biggest mistake was trying to shock the audience by attempting to connect loose ends and rewrite The Doctor's entire history.

It did the complete opposite instead, opening up so many questions that it just confused the viewer even more. There are Daleks and Cybermen, but it doesn't feel like Doctor Who anymore. Jodie Whittaker steps into the Doctor's timeless shoes in the eleventh season of the show. Unfortunately for her and Whovians all over the world, the show also introduced a completely new roster of writers who didn't hesitate to make Doctor Who into a shell of its former self.

While critics seemed to enjoy the new take on The Doctor's adventures, fans were far less happy with the changes to the narrative, which culminated in a lackluster season that didn't live up to the expectations of having a new, completely different incarnation of The Doctor take over. The seventh season of the show, like the previous one, consists of two parts divided by a Christmas special.

The first half marks the last appearances of Amy and Rory, and the second sees the reintroduction of Jenna-Louise Coleman now as the Doctor's new companion , Clara Oswald. For the first time since the show's revival in , the seventh season consisted of standalone episodes only, with no multi-parters, and brought back one of the Doctor's recurring enemies, the Great Intelligence. Fans were mostly receptive to this season, with several above-average episodes and only a few duds here and there.

Peter Capaldi struggles but ultimately pulls this entire season through great and mediocre episodes alike. Onto the podium positions now, and taking third spot, is season one. It was a gamble for the BBC to revive the series, having seen an attempt to reboot things back in fall flat. An average of Fans' only complaint was that Eccleston walked away afterward, with the MCU actor giving the Doctor a unique take never seen before.

Taking the silver medal is the third season of the sci-fi show. With Rose out of the picture, the Doctor doesn't waste much time in getting a new companion in the form of Martha Jones. She helps our hero bounce back to sensational effect, while it's also enjoyable seeing John Barrowman return as Captain Jack Harkness , who had previously been introduced back in season one. The final two episodes are the crowning moments, however, with John Simm sensational as The Master.

He's presumed dead at the end of the series after being shot by his girlfriend, Lucy, but more on that next Scooping the gold medal is season four, Tennant's final bow as the Doctor. What's particularly impressive about this series is its foreshadowing of the twist that Donna Noble is the key to saving the entire universe.

The decision to cast Catherine Tate on a permanent basis, having appeared in the Christmas Special, raised eyebrows. But any concerns about the comedian's involvement disappeared nearly straight away. One has to mention the finale, of course. Rose, Mickey, Sarah Jane, Martha, Captain Jack and other figures of the Doctor's past all return to help stop the Daleks in "Journey's End," before Tennant's character has to use every piece of skill in his arsenal to stop the newly-alive Master. It's a crowning moment for the series - and Metacritic users agree.
